Alphabets are one of the most useful things you can have in your embroidery collection. With one set you can personalise towels, bags, baby blankets, quilts, school gear and gifts for the whole family.

We have two kinds of alphabet. Plain fonts are everyday lettering for names and words, in styles from neat and simple to fun, curly, spooky or nautical. Most alphabets are available as a complete set and as individual letters, so you can buy just the initials you need for one project or get the whole set to use again and again. Look out for the free letter offered every day.

Tips for stitching alphabets

• Use your machine software or a printed template to line up letters before you hoop
• Stitch a test letter on scrap fabric with the same stabiliser first
• For towels and other textured fabrics, add a water soluble topper so stitches sit on top of the pile
