Volunteer to test Allsorts StitchLab

I've spent the past few months improving my embroidery software, and before it goes on sale I need people to use it on their own designs and tell me what goes wrong.

What it is

Allsorts StitchLab is a Windows program for the designs you already own. It isn't digitising software. If you want to create designs from scratch there are good programs for that, and you should expect to spend time learning them. StitchLab is for everything else, which for most of us is most of the time.

It converts between formats, one file or a whole folder at once. It resizes properly, so the stitch density stays right instead of going sparse or solid. It shows you a real preview with the satins and fills, not a flat outline, and plays the stitch out back so you can see the order things happen in. It checks a design fits your hoop. It gives you a health report telling you what would go wrong at the machine and why, before you've hooped anything. There are thread charts and colour tools, design merging and lettering.

And it browses a folder and shows you your designs, instead of a row of identical blank icons.

What testers get

A free Pro licence to keep, permanently.

You start with a three month tester licence. Once you've sent in three feedback reports it converts to a permanent licence that's yours for good, with free bug fixes for life, the same as a paid one. No further testing required after that.

What I need back

Use it on your own files and tell me what breaks, what confuses you, and what you went looking for and couldn't find. If it crashes or makes no sense, that's the report I actually want. A problem I can fix before release is a problem. A problem I find out about afterwards is a few hundred annoyed people.

Feedback goes through a form rather than email, so nothing gets lost. There's an online version and a printable PDF, whichever suits you better. It asks what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. "I couldn't work out what this button was for" is a perfectly good report.

Who I'm looking for

Places are limited because I read and act on every report. I'm after a spread of machines, hoop sizes, file formats and experience levels.

I'd particularly like to hear from you if you have a Brother or a Bernina, if 5x7 is your largest hoop, or if you find software frustrating rather than interesting. That last one matters more than you'd think. If a program only makes sense to people who already know the jargon, it's been built wrong, and I need people who'll tell me when that's happened.

One thing to expect

When you install it, Windows will probably show a blue box saying it protected your PC. That isn't a virus warning. It means the program is new and Windows hasn't seen many people install it yet. Click More info, then Run anyway, and you'll see the publisher listed as Embroidery Allsorts, which is me.

How to volunteer

Fill in the form here: https://embroidery-allsorts.com/information/software-tester-register

Expressions of interest are open until Friday 12 September (Brisbane time) You'll hear from me either way once I've decided. If there's no place this time you'll go on the announcement list, so you'll know when the software goes on sale.

Design testers for the new freestanding lace and adaptive ranges are coming later in the year. There'll be a separate call for those.

Alice, I keep coming back to this call for testers for Allsorts StitchLab, as I'm both intrigued and interested, however, I may not be eligible as I have a Mac rather than a PC, so my operating system is not Windows. If you would like to have a Mac tester, feel free to let me know and I will then complete the application.

It is much easier. But I'm wondering about what might be a website thing. Even when I sign in as soon as I get to the site, I often have to sign in again on another page. Today (but not always) I had to sign in again to check out. Sometimes I need to sign in to add to my cart. It makes sense if I forgot to sign in right away, but this happens even when I'm signed in.

I don't know why that is Faith, I do know that the sign in at the top of the page won't work on account pages but if you are on an account page the sign in should be there anyway. I will add that to the to do list to look into. I will get back to you.

4 hourly free download: no login needed, just click and grab it.

Daily free design: still needs you logged in.

Download or file problems: post in the tech support group, not here. It sends you an automatic knowledge base tip and emails us both, so you often get an answer straight away.

The 4 hourly free download

Every 4 hours a different design goes free. No account, no login, no email address. Click, download, done.

It pulls at random from the whole catalogue. Every design on the site is in the draw, sets included, all 5,000 plus. So what is sitting there right now could be a single letter, or it could be a full alphabet set that would normally cost you real money.

You have no way of knowing until you look. Check in with your coffee, check in before bed. Some visits you will shrug, some visits you will not believe your luck.

When the 4 hours are up it goes back to full price and the next one takes its place.

See what is free right now: 4 HOURLY FREEBIE

The daily free design

This one has not changed. You still need to be logged in to your account to download it, because it goes through your account like a normal order. If you have not made an account yet it takes about a minute and it is free.

Site problems

Good news. I have ironed out the bugs and the site is running smoothly.

If you do hit a problem, please report it in the tech support group rather than here. When you post, the knowledge base tips for your issue go up instantly and you get an email with those tips and a link to your post. I get an email at the same time, so I know it has happened.

Make sure you pick the correct issue when you post, otherwise you will get tips for the wrong thing.

Please do not post your issue as a comment on another post, in another group, or anywhere else on Facebook. I may not be notified and it will sit there unanswered.

If you cannot log in at all, use the chat at the bottom right of the screen.

Over to you

Two things I would like to know, and I do read every reply.

Which do you actually use more, the 4 hourly download or the daily free design? I am deciding where to put my time and your answer changes what I make next.

And what are you stitching at the moment? Post a photo in the comments. I love seeing where the designs end up, and it gives everyone else ideas.

There are over 5,000 designs on the site now, mostly alphabets. Have a dig around: [SITE LINK]

You never know what you will find for instant download in the 4 hourly Freebie page. It changes to a new one every four hours, six a day, drawn at random from nearly 6,000 designs including full sets. No account needed, just download it while it's there. Four hours and it's gone, replaced by something else. If you want a daily free design as well, you will find that on the Specials page.
