How to adjust bobbin tension on your embroidery machine

Most machine embroiderers and sewers know how to change the top thread tension on their machine. But sometimes it is actually the bobbin thread that needs a little tweaking.

Why is bobbin thread showing on top of my design?

If you are seeing bobbin thread on the top of your designs, it is often because the bobbin thread is too loose, not because the top tension is too tight. Tension is all about balance. If your bobbin thread is coming out too fast, you can adjust the top tension all you like and you might see some improvement, but you won't fix the real problem.

Finding the right screw

Take a look at your bobbin case and you will see two screws. The larger one is the tension screw, and that is the one you adjust. Leave the small one alone, as it just holds the spring in place.

How to adjust it

  1. Turn the large screw clockwise to tighten and anticlockwise to loosen.
  2. Make small adjustments. You will usually only need about a quarter of a turn, so don't overdo it.
  3. Put the bobbin back in and do a test stitch out before you start your real project.

How do I know when it is right?

You can buy a gauge that tells you if your bobbin tension is correct. In Australia, Echidna sells a thread tension guide, though I am not sure if it is available overseas. To be honest, with a little practice you will learn how it should feel when you pull the thread through the bobbin case. It soon becomes second nature.

Happy stitching,

Alice
