Redwork Machine Embroidery Designs

Redwork is outline embroidery worked in a single colour, traditionally red on white, and it remains one of the most useful styles to have in a collection. There are no colour changes, stitch counts are low, and the finished result is light enough for quilt blocks, table linen and garments that would buckle under a filled design.

The range here includes fairies, mermaids, cycle critters, centaurs and assorted motifs, all worked in the same outline style so they can be mixed across a single project without looking mismatched.

Not Just Red

The name is traditional rather than a restriction. Blue on white is a common variation, and a single dark colour on a light background works for almost any project. Because there is only one thread involved, redwork is the easiest style to match to an existing colour scheme.

Quilt blocks need to stay flat and flexible so they sit properly when pieced. Redwork adds almost no stiffness, which is why it has been the standard choice for embroidered quilt blocks for well over a century.
