Free standing lace machine embroidery designs

Free standing lace, or FSL, is stitched onto water soluble stabiliser with no fabric at all. Once the stabiliser is rinsed away you are left with a piece of lace that holds its own shape.

It is perfect for bookmarks, ornaments, baskets, jewellery, lace hearts and 3D flowers, and it always impresses people who have never seen it made.

Tips for free standing lace

• Hoop two layers of a good quality water soluble stabiliser, or one layer of a heavy fibrous one
• Use the same thread in the bobbin as on top, as both sides will show
• Rinse in warm water, then lay flat or shape over a form to dry
• Slow your machine down a little for the best results
