Free Standing Lace Machine Embroidery Designs
Free standing lace is embroidery with no fabric at all. The design stitches onto water soluble stabiliser, and because every stitch is locked into the ones around it, the piece holds together on its own once the stabiliser is rinsed out. Bookmarks, Christmas decorations, angels, snowmen, hearts and lace panels all work this way.
How to Stitch It
Use two layers of a firm water soluble stabiliser, hooped tightly with no give. Use the same thread in the bobbin as on top, because both sides of the finished piece will be seen. Do not skip colour changes or shorten the design, as the structure depends on the full stitch sequence.
Rinsing and Shaping
Rinse in warm water until the stabiliser is gone, but leave a trace of it in if you want the piece to hold a firmer shape. Pin out flat on a towel while damp and let it dry fully before moving it. Rushing this step is the usual reason a piece dries buckled.
