Christmas lettering earns its keep on stockings, gift sacks, tree decorations and place settings, where a single initial does the whole job. A stocking with one large festive letter reads better than a full name squeezed across the cuff.

This group includes free standing lace letters, which stitch on water soluble stabiliser and hang on the tree with no backing fabric at all, and fringed Santa letters where the thread is clipped after stitching to create a raised beard.

Start these early. Individually they are small, but nobody makes just one, and free standing lace needs washing and drying time on top of stitching time.
